Saying Our Stories A Guide for Individuals Who Are Story-Listeners【電子書籍】[ Ronald H. Sunderland ]

SOS is the culmination of my work since 1966, when my wife, Noel, and I moved from Melbourne, Australia, to Houston, Texas. My initial goal was to begin a four-year clinical pastoral education program (CPE) at the Institute of Religion in the Texas Medical Center. The long-term dream was to develop a parish-based lay pastoral education program to equip laypeople to serve with their ordained pastors in the pastoral ministry of the parish.

Until the midnineteenth century, pastoral care was the province of parish clergy, for which few were adequately equipped. I aimed to change that model by demonstrating that laypeople with the necessary training were integral to the church's ministry. That would entail providing clergy with supervisory skills.

The founder organizations of the newly constituted Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) had pioneered clergy pastoral care education in the 1920s. The Equipping Laypeople for Ministry (ELM) program, which I founded in 1979, proved effective in the dual tasks of lay pastoral care training and the preparation of clergy for their necessary function of oversight of lay pastors.

Saying Our Stories is the account of the pioneering effort to undertake those tasks and demonstrate the effectiveness of the new model of parish pastoral ministry. It is a book of stories. The text suggests that pastoral care, at heart, is knowing that when a troubled person casts round for someone to listen to her (or his) story, they need a caring story-listener. Such listening is hard work, but story-listeners know that to listen is to care. If they finish up thinking, "All I did was listen," they know it is such a big all!

Further, the monograph critically examines the impact of development agendas on community projects and processes, discussing in detail the pervasiveness of the development discourse in every aspect of community radio and how it manifests on air. Listeners Dare Hearing God in the Sermon【電子書籍】[ William H. Willimon ]

Discipleship and witness are not self-sustainable. Preaching equips God’s people for the work of serving and building up the body of Christ (Eph. 4:11).

The gospel is news that passes from the lips of one who has heard to the ears of one who has not yet heard, then (God willing) it burrows in the soul, energizing the hands in daring response to a word received. Preaching is instigated by an astounding claim: Good news; God has spoken to us. The Christian life is what you get when ordinary folk respond: I have heard.

The book (a companion to Preachers Dare) is for anyone who listens to sermonsーwhich includes preachers, since there’s no way to preach without gaining skills as a listener. Listening is a human skill, but as God’s word is proclaimed, the hearer experiences a vocal mix of preacher, listener, and God.

Praise for Listeners Dare
“Books about preachingーhow to research, write, and deliver sermonsーare legion. But books about how sermons are heard, internalized, and acted upon by ordinary Christians in the pews are rare. Willimon addresses this elusive yet critically important task with his usual wit, acumen, and pastor’s heart. A few hours pondering this thought-filled work will pay handsome dividends come Sunday.”
ーGrant Wacker, Gilbert T. Rowe Distinguished Professor of Christian History, Duke Divinity School, Durham, NC

“There is no shortage of resources out there for how to prepare and preach a sermon, and yet faith comes from hearing. In turning our attention to the homiletical process of listening, Willimon has given clergy and laity alike a true gift. Together, we get to listen for God’s daring Wordーa word that in our hearing brings about holy obedience, persistent hope, and daring discipleship.”
ーKaroline M. Lewis, Marbury E. Anderson Chair of Biblical Preaching, Professor of Biblical Preaching, Luther Seminary; Program Director, Festival of Homiletics

“Listening to a sermon is a spiritual disciplineーthat is the simple, profound insight that underpins this rich offering from Will Willimon.”
ーLauren F. Winner, Associate Professor, Duke Divinity School, Durham, NC

Listeners Like Who? Exclusion and Resistance in the Public Radio Industry【電子書籍】[ Laura Garbes ]

How public radio has perpetuated racial inequality since its foundingーand how journalists of color are challenging white dominance in the workplace and on the public airwaves

National Public Radio was established in 1970 with a mission to provide programming for all Americans, yet the gap between public radio’s pluralistic mandate and its failure to serve marginalized communities has plagued the industry from the start. Listeners Like Who? takes readers inside the public radio industry, revealing how the network’s sound and listenership are reflections of its inherent whiteness, and describing the experiences of the nonwhite journalists who are fighting for change.

Drawing on institutional archives, oral histories, and original in-depth interviews with journalists of color in public radio, Laura Garbes shows that when NPR and its affiliate stations first began its appeals for donations from “listeners like you,” it was appealing to white, well-educated donors. She discusses how this initial focus created a sustainable financial model in the face of government underfunding, but how these same factors have alienated broad swaths of nonwhite and working-class audiences and limited the creative freedoms of nonwhite public radio workers. Garbes tells the stories of the employees of color who are disrupting the aesthetic norms and narrative practices embedded in the industry.

Centering sound in how we think about the workplace and organizational life, Listeners Like Who? provides insights into the media’s role in upholding racial inequality and the complex creative labor by nonwhite journalists to expand who and what gets heard on public radio.

Meditations from the Classics Ancient Voices for Modern Listeners【電子書籍】[ David R. Denny ]

There's a delightful melody in the ancient voices as they travel through time's narrow door. I hear them best on my front-porch rocker that faces an ocean marsh. There, beneath curious stars, the orchestration emerges, mingling with moonlight tides. Sometimes Socrates sings the high notes while Thucydides pulls the bass line. Aristophanes rallies his chorus, and Caesar charges over a hilltop near the dark Teutoburg Forest. There are times when I struggle with the faint lyrics, but with patience, the scenes begin to breathe again. Hurry! It's midnight, and the curtain is opening. The actors twirl their swords and fluff their flowing robes. Sophocles is quieting the theater, requesting our attention. Oedipus, now an aged actor, leans upon his daughter Antigone. His face glowers from twenty years of wandering beneath ghastly burdens and past failures. Slowly, they climb a rocky path that leads to the edge of a forest. His words still resonate for us today with a vibrant relevance, as do all thirty-three ancient authors in Meditations from the Classics.

Making a Scene in the Pulpit Vivid Preaching for Visual Listeners【電子書籍】[ Alyce M. McKenzie ]

How can preachers ensure that their sermons continue to engage listeners in a world defined by visual media and the short, segmented delivery of information? Alyce McKenzie harnesses the element of drama and the human fascination with scenes to offer ministers a modern means of sermon development and delivery.

McKenzie's core strategy is to invite listeners into scenesーwhether from Scripture or contemporary lifeーand, once they are there, to point them toward the larger story of God's relationship with humankind. Creating such scenes unifies the whole process of preaching, she says, from the preacher's daily life observations to interpretation of scenes from Scripture, to sermon shaping, sequencing, and delivery. The process culminates in a specific understanding of the purpose of the sermon: to send listeners out into the scenes they'll play in their lives for the next week, equipped to act out their parts in ways that are kinder, more just, and more courageous than last week.
