Listeners Like Who? Exclusion and Resistance in the Public Radio Industry【電子書籍】[ Laura Garbes ]

How public radio has perpetuated racial inequality since its foundingーand how journalists of color are challenging white dominance in the workplace and on the public airwaves

National Public Radio was established in 1970 with a mission to provide programming for all Americans, yet the gap between public radio’s pluralistic mandate and its failure to serve marginalized communities has plagued the industry from the start. Listeners Like Who? takes readers inside the public radio industry, revealing how the network’s sound and listenership are reflections of its inherent whiteness, and describing the experiences of the nonwhite journalists who are fighting for change.

Drawing on institutional archives, oral histories, and original in-depth interviews with journalists of color in public radio, Laura Garbes shows that when NPR and its affiliate stations first began its appeals for donations from “listeners like you,” it was appealing to white, well-educated donors. She discusses how this initial focus created a sustainable financial model in the face of government underfunding, but how these same factors have alienated broad swaths of nonwhite and working-class audiences and limited the creative freedoms of nonwhite public radio workers. Garbes tells the stories of the employees of color who are disrupting the aesthetic norms and narrative practices embedded in the industry.

Centering sound in how we think about the workplace and organizational life, Listeners Like Who? provides insights into the media’s role in upholding racial inequality and the complex creative labor by nonwhite journalists to expand who and what gets heard on public radio.

The Ashes of Tomorrow A Survivalist Radio Host and the Ghosts of His Listeners【電子書籍】[ Nathan Ellison ]

The rasping breath of the Crimson Fever silenced the world. Seattle, once vibrant, now lies draped in ash and perpetual drizzle, a monument to decay. From a fortified basement, Silas Greer clings to the remnants of his past life, his radio a lifeline cast into the echoing silence. His nightly broadcasts, a balm for his own isolation, become a beacon for scattered survivors, their fractured voices weaving a grim tapestry of resilience and loss.

But the silence isn't empty. Chilling transmissions emerge from the quarantined Red Zones ? whispers of the dead, defying the natural laws of life and death. Drawn into a conspiracy far deeper than the pandemic, Silas transforms from solitary broadcaster to reluctant investigator, his broadcasts now a desperate search for answers in a city haunted by more than just memories.

Among the spectral voices, one repeats ? Echo Seven. The unsettlingly familiar tone triggers a disquieting sense of recognition, a spectral echo from a past Silas desperately tries to bury. Aided by Dr. Iris Ackerley, a widowed physician whose pragmatism grounds his growing obsession, Silas unravels a sinister truth about the pandemic’s origins. Their investigation weaves a complex tapestry of human connection against a backdrop of unimaginable loss, drawing them into a nightmarish world of clandestine government projects and the horrifying consequences of tampering with human consciousness.

As Silas delves deeper, the line between reality and the spectral transmissions blurs. His fortified studio becomes a locus of paranormal activity, his mind besieged by visions and whispers that threaten his sanity. The whispers lead to a decaying research facility in the heart of the Red Zone, where Silas and his companions confront the terrifying truth behind Echo Seven and the Crimson Fever itself. Their journey becomes a desperate struggle for survival against an unseen enemy, a fight not just for their lives, but for the future of humanity.

What began as a search for connection transforms into a harrowing fight for survival, a confrontation that forces Silas to make a terrifying choice: silence the whispers and condemn humanity to a slow decline, or harness their power, risking the unleashing of an unimaginable horror. In the ashes of tomorrow, Silas discovers that sometimes, the only way to heal is to embrace the ghosts of the past.

Meditations from the Classics Ancient Voices for Modern Listeners【電子書籍】[ David R. Denny ]

There's a delightful melody in the ancient voices as they travel through time's narrow door. I hear them best on my front-porch rocker that faces an ocean marsh. There, beneath curious stars, the orchestration emerges, mingling with moonlight tides. Sometimes Socrates sings the high notes while Thucydides pulls the bass line. Aristophanes rallies his chorus, and Caesar charges over a hilltop near the dark Teutoburg Forest. There are times when I struggle with the faint lyrics, but with patience, the scenes begin to breathe again. Hurry! It's midnight, and the curtain is opening. The actors twirl their swords and fluff their flowing robes. Sophocles is quieting the theater, requesting our attention. Oedipus, now an aged actor, leans upon his daughter Antigone. His face glowers from twenty years of wandering beneath ghastly burdens and past failures. Slowly, they climb a rocky path that leads to the edge of a forest. His words still resonate for us today with a vibrant relevance, as do all thirty-three ancient authors in Meditations from the Classics.
