Every picture tells a story, and stories have the power to educate. Looking at two key Jungian archetypes ? the father and the shadow ? from a challenging perspective, this book investigates the negative, shadowy side of fatherhood and its detrimental effect on children by presenting a collection of stories from all over the world.

Blurring the line between fiction and fact, art and academic theory, the book travels across a difficult psychosocial landscape, discussing family life, mental health, and criminality. Mark Holmwood highlights the educational value of these stories whilst exploring the father?child dynamic, adverse childhood experiences, father hunger, asymmetrical power relations, psychological manipulation, narcissism, domestic violence, sexual abuse, patricide, and filicide. Jungian and post-Jungian viewpoints on the bond between fathers and their children are woven into a bigger, interconnected narrative which invites the readers to re-think clinical, sociological, and mythological connections through the lens of modern masculinity and men’s studies. Discussing five different types of negative fathers, the book presents their children’s struggles and underlines their resilience at the same time, emphasising assertion, challenge, questioning, and if necessary, acceptance, all being a part of the complex and transformative psychological process called individuation.

Written with a clear and direct style, Shadows of Fatherhood, Jung, and Film will be of interest to mental health professionals, Jungian scholars, students, teachers and researchers in social sciences, humanities, and the arts, as well as general readers with a distinctive interest in men’s studies, father?child relations, and cinema.

The first of a three-book series about the journey of fatherhood and some of the things we face on said journey. While our stories may be different, our struggles and experiences may be the same. Us, as men and fathers, a lot of the time, we try to keep our emotions pinned up inside, not speaking on the things we go through. That needs to change, and so does the narrative when it comes to us as African American men and fathers or any father, for that matter, that may face the kinds of struggles discussed in this story. This book is meant to salute and commend all the fathers out there doing it, playing a vital part in the lives of their kids daily, and challenge the men out there that want to be better. Never lose sight of your children, despite whatever adversity, or curveball life may throw your way. You never know how you can affect the world by what you pour into them, time spent is crucial. Always remember, the richest moments have nothing to do with money or financial prominence, but from the life we live, and the deep-rooted knowledge we gain from those experiences whether good or bad. Embrace your life, live your truths, find your voice and watch negatives become positive.

Life is about reflection, when you look in the mirror what is it that you see? Are you a better man than the ones who came before you? The ones that have taught you life lessons; positive or negative? As I sit and reflect on my life, I find that some of the most valuable lessons came from the losses, yes, Moral Victories. But again, it's all about how you perceive the loss. It's all up to you. Are you going to make excuses, when things don't go to the exact science you want, or are you willing to adapt, and adjust for the greater good of not only you, but for the others that may be closest to you? Sometimes sacrifice and compromise can be key to a fulfilling existence, but only you can decide that for yourself. For we only have one life to live. Grab it by the horns and own it. It's your story, unique because while others can say they have shared similar experiences, no one can ever say they've walked in your shoes. Again, while our struggles may be similar, our stories are not the same, everyone has their own. This is just mine, and if putting it out there to the world reaches one person and affects them positively, then I have succeeded. Our children should push us to dig deeper within ourselves, and reach higher to attain our goals.

A manual that directly speaks to what it means to be a dad today, driving a movement that explores modern interpretations and diverse perspectives of fatherhood.

Fatherhood will change you. That much is certain. But whilst it can never be under your control, it can be under your influence.

The old rules of fatherhood are no longer fit for purpose. It used to be simple: you had to protect, provide for, and preside over your family. But the world has changed, seeing today’s dads question the role they play in society, at work, and in their homes, as they feel the once-solid foundation of fatherhood crumble beneath their feet.

This redefinition of a role previously set in stone for generations has sent dads looking for answers. Thousands have found them in their inboxes, via The New Fatherhood, the #1 fatherhood newsletter on Substack from Kevin Maguire. For five years, he has interviewed some of the world’s best thinkers, studied the output of our most creative minds, and dove deep into the archives of peer-reviewed parenting.

New Fatherhood transforms those sources into an updated operating system for modern dads: delivered through deeply personal stories, transformative perspectives on success and sense of purpose, compact frameworks, habits that stick, and techniques you can apply in even the most turbulent moments.

This second edition of Helaine Selin’s successful Parenting Across Cultures comes at a time where interest in parenting has increased across the world as a result of the COVID pandemic, as parents and children were put into different and often challenging conditions. This new edition, like the first, contains chapters from countries in Asia, Africa, and South America as well as from indigenous cultures of several Western countries. The chapters were revised to include new research in the post-pandemic world. They show that there is a strong connection between culture and parenting: there are differences in affection and distance, harshness and repression, and acceptance and criticism. Some parents insist on obedience; others are concerned with individual development. This clearly differs from parent to parent, but there is just as clearly a connection to culture, which these chapters explore. In addition to the chapters on individual countries, the second edition includes a section on the pandemic, as well as new research on parenting and technology, gender, religion, adoption, step parenting, divorce, single parents, racism, gay parents, disabilities, autism, eating habits, transgender, attachment, migration, bullying, and refugee resettlement.

Imperfect Dads, One Perfect Father: Encouraging Men Through the Journey of Fatherhood.

Want to be a better father? Four dads have come together to create a powerfully honest and insightful guide for men who sincerely want to improve relationships with their kids. Many men struggle with strained connections with their own dad, or the effects of having grown up without a male role model. This imperfect model of fatherhood has left a generation of dads without the foundation for raising their own kids.

The authors share their uniquely diverse perspectives and personal experiences to show that no matter who you are, how you grew up or what your current situation is, you can always look to the one perfect example of fatherhood to guide you into sharing the best relationship you've ever had with your kids. God the Father created the gift of being a dad, and it's through His very own example that we learn not the best way, but the only way to be dad.

If you're not the dad you thought you'd be at this point in life or if you're looking to up your game in the dad department, Imperfect Dads, One Perfect Father will encourage men through the journey of fatherhood.

Despite a decade of sociological research documenting black fathers’ significant level of engagement with their children, stereotypes of black men as “deadbeat dads” still shape popular perceptions and scholarly discourse. In Fathering from the Margins, sociologist Aasha M. Abdill draws on four years of fieldwork in low-income, predominantly black Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, to dispel these destructive assumptions. She considers the obstacles facedーand the strategies usedーby black men with children.

Abdill presents qualitative and quantitative evidence that confirms the increasing presence of black fathers in their communities, arguing that changing social norms about gender roles in black families have shifted fathering behaviors. Black men in communities such as Bed-Stuy still face social and structural disadvantages, including disproportionate unemployment and incarceration, with significant implications for family life. Against this backdrop, black fathers attempt to reconcile contradictory beliefs about what makes one a good father and what makes one a respected man by developing different strategies for expressing affection and providing parental support. Black men’s involvement with their children is affected by the attitudes of their peers, the media, and especially the women of their families and communities: from the grandmothers who often become gatekeepers to involvement in a child’s life to the female-dominated sectors of childcare, primary school, and family-service provision. Abdill shows how supporting black men in their quest to beーand be seen asーfamily men is the key to securing not only their children's well-being but also their own.
